Featured Artist for March 2012 Avery Anderson |
|
|
|
March brings us the fabulous work of one of my best friends and mentor, Avery Anderson |
|
I met Avery when we both signed up with the International Guild of Glass Artists to be founders on their Board of Directors in 1995. We quickly became fast friends, Avery living in Worcester, Massachusetts at the time, and I, here in Medford, Oregon.
We met in person for the first time at the AGSA Glass show in Seattle in 1995. It was Avery that sent me my first kiln and shortly after that, a box of compatible glass scrap that was not well packed. I thought the UPS guy was going to have a heart attack when he came to deliver the box! "No, it's ok, it's supposed to sound that way." |

I have had the pleasure of knowing and sharing with Avery for almost 20 years. She is an amazing and talented woman who never ceases to inspire me to do greater works of fused glass. I hope she will inspire you as well.

Avery grew up in Florida and both of her parents were involved in the arts and owned three different galleries. Their love of the arts compelled Avery to want to explore the possibilities of working with glass and then eventually she began using some of their pottery techniques applied to glass that had not been done before. After she raised her family, she knew exactly what she wanted to do and started enrolling in some design and glass classes.

Avery has studied with many different glass artists learning different techniques and coming up with a few of her own. She has taught from her home studio. For several years she traveled across the county with Brock Craig teaching multiple day seminars on some of their advanced techniques. She has been accepted into numerous galleries, won many awards for her work, and had a great number of her creations featured in publications such as American Style, Niche, The Crafts Report, Glass Craftsman, Contemporary Glass and many more. You can find her work from coast to coast and beyond. |
Avery also has a great love for animals. She has worked as a veterinary tech, wild life rehaber and dog trainer.
Avery and Sadie Avery's love for animals weaves its way into her designs. |
| The series she was working on when we met, Animal Medicine series, has always been one of my favorites, especially when I found out that we share a totem (one of many strange coincidences in our lives). |
Buffalo from the Animal Medicine series |

Her work has so much depth and intricacy to it you almost have to reach out and touch it. She combines many different techniques such as sandblasting, airbrushing, silk screening, photo resist as well as additions of precious metals to make her pieces amazingly unique.
